A core-ker of a day

EVERYDAY apples such as Granny Smith or Golden Delicious will definitely not be on the menu when Clumber Park holds its Apple Celebration weekend tomorrow and Sunday.

The National Trust venue is reintroducing apples from yesteryear, and visitors will have the chance to crunch on various unusual apple varieties, said a park spokesman.

”Clumber will hold a celebration of the humble but versatile apple this weekend in the Walled Kitchen Garden” they said.

”Visitors will be able to enjoy a display of the huge range of apple varieties grown at Clumber – including of course the famous Bramley’s Seedling that we’re all familiar with, as well as less familiar varieties such as Bess Pool, Brown’s South Lincoln Beauty, Beeley Pippin and Sissons’ Worksop Newtown.”

Said head gardener Chris Margrave: ”It gives us a real buzz to know that we’ll be reintroducing varieties grown here in the past. Conserving old varieties is important, not just in historic gardens like Clumber, but for everyone, and not just for their intrinsic historic importance, but for practical reasons as well.

To help you find your favourite apple there’ll be apple tasting – and you’ll be able to buy some to take home, together with other seasonal produce from the Walled Kitchen Garden. The Clumber Restaurant will also be serving a variety of apple-based dishes.

Normal admission prices into the Park and Walled Kitchen Garden apply.
