No excuse for violence

Over the next few months we are focusing our efforts on reducing violent crime in West Bassetlaw.

The latest statistics show an increase of 9 per cent in this type of crime, compared to the same period last year, and this is unacceptable by our standards.

Whether at home or out and about — from threatening words to a sustained physical attack with a weapon — violence of any kind will not be tolerated.

On many occasions violence is fuelled by alcohol and is often avoidable if only people would stop and consider the implications before deciding to react.

Victims of violent crime at the very least are left distressed by the ordeal and, in cases where physical violence is used, it can result in serious, life-altering injuries and even death.

Our One Punch campaign highlights the potential consequences of even a single punch.

We are working with our partners to find ways of reducing violent crime, which can happen in abusive relationships or spontaneous assaults.

Next month we hope to meet with representatives from Women’s Aid to discuss engagement tactics to encourage more people to report domestic violence.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you about the White Ribbon campaign that is currently running across Nottinghamshire

Launched in partnership with a variety of agencies, it calls for men to make a stand against domestic abuse.

We are supporting this campaign and asking those ‘Man Enough’ to not commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women to sign the pledge at www.man-enough.org or by texting ‘man’ or ‘man enough’ to 81400.

And don’t forget, men can also be victims of domestic violence.

Don’t suffer in silence. If you are a victim of domestic violence or suspect someone you know is, or have witnessed an assault, call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
