Dinno gets broadband

It was reported in last month’s Guardian that high speed fibre broadband is available to most residents in the Dinno area.

This breaking news is a boost to the area and as we all know plenty of fibre is good for your system. BT Openreach hopes to make the high speed technology available to around two thirds of the UK homes by the end of 2014.

In short it means a family can download a movie, watch a TV recording, surf the web, play games and upload photos to Facebook at the same time.

Now this all sounds good, but how will it help Dinno folk? I put the question to a few retired residents enjoying their weekly game of bingo at the Resource Centre - and the response was a touch negative to say the least.

Moggy Mick the miner said: “I’ve only just got the hang of Teletext and I don’t have a flap top so nowt in it for me,” while Dulux Jeff pointed out he’s got enough cables coming in and out his bungalow without any more.

In short most said they would have preferred the money spent on a canopy over the entrance to Dinno Doctors so they don’t get wet while queuing to book an appointment.

Deadly Doug from our local undertakers Pushing up Daisies told me an interesting story last week. An elderly man had died after a long illness. While in hospital he had instructed his wife to make sure he was buried with all his money in his coffin. He said he had worked hard all his life for it and wanted to take it with him to the afterlife.

On the day of the funeral the dutiful wife turned up with a small envelope and gave it to Doug to put in the coffin. She said: “I’ve done what I promised, I have got all his money together and put it into my account. In the envelope he will find a cheque. If he can cash it, he can spend it.”

The Dinno man who won £2 million on the lottery last week was asked what he will do with all the begging letters. He replied: “I will still be sending them.”
