Maltby party snap from decades ago
LIFE was simpler 60 years ago!
Jean Higgins (later Drabble) and Ida Trotter (later Bulleyment), both aged about 20, are pictured enjoying a well earned rest, sitting on their raincoats, at a charity Garden Party at Sandbeck Park.
Friends Jean and Ida lived in Maltby and worked together at the Urban District Council offices which were then located at The Grange, on Rotherham Road.
They certainly look the part in their best frocks and had clearly put time and effort into getting their hairdos just so.
At the time, the country was only slowly recovering from the privations of the war years and pretty dress fabrics and cosmetics were still in very short supply.
Most women made their own clothes or had them run up for them and people then would have been totally overwhelmed by the huge choice available to us today.
Jean tells me her outfit was the work of Mrs Smith, a local dressmaker, who lived on Highfield Park.
Having made such an effort with their appearance, the girls had then had to compromise this by cycling a couple of miles down the road to reach their destination.
It looks as if the weather was kind to them! Stalls, games, refreshments and doubtless a brass band would have greeted them at Sandbeck and the joy would have lain in walking around the grounds and in meeting people.
