Kiveton's sunny old days
WITH such fine weather this week, the minds of many have remembered how hot days were spent in years gone by.
And wandering in the fields, lanes and along the canal were always favourites in Kiveton.
The Chesterfield Canal - completed in June 1777 - has played a very important role in the development of this area.
It carried coal, brick and a whole variety of other cargoes. Anston stone to build the Houses of Parliament was taken from Dog Kennels Bridge in Kiveton along the canal in the 1840s.
The Canal was in use until the early 1960s, and in later years it fell into disrepair.
But sterling work by the Chesterfield Canal Trust has had a tremendous impact, in restoring the canal and researching its history.
Many parts are fully restored and there are exciting plans for its future.
From 23rd to 25th May, thousands of people will gather in Kiveton Park for the Chesterfield Canal Festival. There will be much to see and do for all visitors.
