Kiveton team photo taken way back when

KIVETON Park's football team pose for a team shot on a chilly winter's day around 70 years ago - with well-known market gardener William Harris pictured in the middle row, second from the right.

Josephine Harris, of Broom Grove, South Anston, said her husband found this picture when he was clearing out his father's home after his death around 13 years ago, adding that it brought back many happy memories.

"I think it's just a brilliant picture and lovely to see everyone on it it. I knew many of the people on it from when I was a little girl and have many fond memories of them all," she said.

William, who passed away in Todwick Home in 1997, and is buried in Todwick churchyard, used to own the land around the Todwick crossroads and behind where The Saxon pub stands today.

Born and bred in Kiveton Park, he was a market gardener who owned Kiveton Gardens where he used to grow a variety of fruit during the Second World War.

Said Josephine: "It was terrific - of course in those days there was no tinned stuff and it was all fresh. He used to grow all sorts, apples, pears, rhubarb and raspberries - really delicious stuff."

She added: "He also used to have POW Germans come and work on his land during the war. It was a really interesting time and he was a very hard worker."

Josephine described William as a 'fantastic' father-in-law and said he was a well-known and respected man around Kiveton Park.

"He worked in the pits from a young age and then moved onto market gardening when they bought the gardens at Hepworth. He was crazy about football and also liked tennis."

"There was very little to do in those days, so the football team was really important for Kiveton Park," she said.

She added: "I think this photo will be of great interest to the people in the village and I hope it brings back as many happy memories for them as it has for me."
