Cricket in Maltby in the 1930s...

LAST year this picture was given to Maltby Local History Society by a member of the family of the late Mrs Louisa Fisher who used to live on Blyth Road.

Mrs Fisher presumably kept the photograph because it included a picture of her husband, Arthur, seated at the right hand end of the front row - proudly wearing his cap.

Arthur was the local undertaker, whose premises were on the rough road which leads from Millindale to High Street.

The picture dates from 1932 and it was taken when village and colliery league cricket was at its height.

It shows the obviously-successful Maltby Main Colliery team outside what is thought to be the old sports pavilion on the Miners' Welfare Ground to the east of Muglet Lane.

One of the officials was J W Webster, who was headteacher of Maltby Crags School.

The team had some very good players including Albert Davies, fourth from the right on the back row, who was a well-known member of the local Roman Catholic community.

It must be more than 20 years ago that I sat in his son's garden, and chatted with Albert about his sporting success.

Further information about this picture and the people in it would be welcomed on 01709 812035.
