Don’t forget the pet shop
In reply to Linda in last week’s Guardian remembering Ryton Street in the sixties, in my view, she has omitted the most important shop in the street, the Pet Stores at 14 Ryton Street.
It was situated between the builder’s entrance of Leverton and Brown and Gordon Bassett’s hairdressers.
My father, Mr Ron Brough was the shop’s owner and was a well known figure in the town and chairman of the local Canine Society.
New animals or birds were always being introduced into the front window which delighted children and adults with their antics.
I remember a dear little marmoset monkey sitting in its own tree house looking out at the delighted customers.
The warehousing for the Pet Stores was down the street in the old stable block at the King Edward Hotel so my dad could often be seen wheeling sacks of bird seed to be mixed into Brough’s Superior Budgerigar or Canary Seed.
The houses he passed were Switchback Terrace before the building of the new post office.
