Call not from Microsoft
I have not been caught by the scam (I think) but someone did ring me about four weeks ago and said they were from Microsoft and my PC would crash within 24 hours if they did not repair it.
I asked how can you tell and they said we have your data on file because you have been in touch with Microsoft in the past about a PC problem. I did make contact with Microsoft four months ago about a problem and they told me they could fix it for a standard one off payment of £90 for a technician to make one visit to take over my pc and guarantee a fix or £110 for any ongoing work thereafter. I took the £90 option and a technician took over my PC (in front of me) for 3 hours trying to fix it, but the next day it went wrong again so I rang again and someone else took over my pc for another two hours and made a fix, since then it’s been OK. But I made contact with Microsoft first!
