A FATHER from Maltby died after taking heroin after years of medical problems.

Gary Moore, 51, died at Burns Court, Maltby, on 1st October 2010 after taking ‘17 lines of heroin’.

He suffered from bi-polar disorder and was sectioned several times. He had also tried to take his own life on a number of occasions, which the inquest heard were ‘a call for help’.

His daughter-in-law Gemma Marie Moore told the inquest that father-of-three Gary had lived a difficult life.

“His difficulties started in the 1990s,” she said. “He went away to work when he took an ecstasy tablet which triggered and underlying mental illness. He became a regular user of ecstasy.”

She continued: “His drug use caused problems with his marriage, which eventually broke down.”

The inquest then heard how Gary ran into trouble with the law on a number of occasions,

Gemma continued: “He was bi-polar, which did effect everything around him. If he was bad with it then he would take marijuana and things like that. He did mention that he used cocaine but never mentioned heroin.”

Gary eventually came to live at Burns Court. The Burns Court Project gave him day-by-day support and was said to be working well with them. The inquest heard that several days before Gary died, he was bright and cheerful but tired.

Pathologist Dr Ali Hussein said that normal therapeutic levels of anti-depressants were found in his blood and but blood samples showed signs of illicit heroin use.

The coroner concluded by recording that the cause of death was heroin toxicity with a ‘dependence upon drugs.

Following the inquest, Gemma told the Guardian: “Gary was an amazing and caring man. He did have plenty of problems but he loved kids and animals. I don’t really care what was said in there - he didn’t take heroin regularly and I am really unhappy with the outcome today - we want more clarity. He only really had problems when he didn’t take his medication.”

Gary’s son Ryan added: “He was well-known in Maltby, and this was completely out-of-character.”

Figures revealed in answers to parliamentary questions show 250 couples with children in part-time work in the Rother Valley could lose around £4,000 a year from this April, following a change to tax credit rules being introduced by the Government.

This change means that couples with children earning less than around £17,700 will need to increase the number of hours they work from a minimum of 16 to 24 hours per week or they will lose all their working tax credit of £3,870 per year.

Raising taxes and cutting spending too far and too fast has seen unemployment rise and the economy go into reverse, and many employers are cutting people’s hours. A recent survey by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development found that one in five organisations have cut back on hours as a result of the economic downturn, with just six per cent increasing them.

With very few people in part-time work being able to increase their hours by up to 50 per cent at the moment, for a couple with children losing around £4,000 a year, or £75 a week, this change could mean going out to work makes no sense. This tax credits bombshell is now just a few weeks away, so I hope that the Government will think again.

The Government’s Health and Social Care Bill suffered further setbacks last week when yet more professional healthcare bodies – the Faculty of Public Health, Institute of Health Managers and Community and Health Practitioners and Health Visitors Association – joined the list of experts opposing the Bill.

Having lost the support of the medical community and the British public, it is time the Prime Minister realised how unpopular this Bill is and how much damage it could do to our NHS. The British people care deeply about their health service and they don’t want to see it damaged by an expensive, unnecessary top-down reorganisation that would leave patients paying the price.

A Big Lottery Fund grant of £8,844 has recently been made to Aughton Primary School. The school will use this funding to provide various activities for families to take place during and after school and in the summer holidays. Congratulations to everyone involved.

The Big Lottery Fund are also helping fund the Big Jubilee Lunch initiative across the UK on Sunday 3rd June, when neighbours are encouraged to get together in their communities.

A GLOBE-TROTTING adventurer has kicked off his walking trek around the world - and made a stop off in Worksop to say hello.

Mihai Tufa is a plucky 26-year-old photographer from Vaslui in Romania.

Last week, he began his seven-year mission to walk around the world for charity. He set off from Harrogate, and this week, dropped by the Worksop Guardian offices to tell us about his ambitious challenge ‘The World Photo Tour’ - to walk around the planet, taking photos and making friends as he goes.

“I see no satisfaction in working in order to pay for food, rent and everything else, to have a rest then only to work some more,” said Mihai. “It’s a meaningless cycle, and I needed some spice in my life.”

“I want to finish this journey, and every piece of time, thought and energy that I have will go into it.”

Mihai went on: “I’ll be taking photos and putting them on my website as I go, together with stories,” he said.

“People can log on and read about the beginning and the blisters, the farewells that were hard to endure, and my first days on the road.”

Mihai said he has particularly enjoyed his walk around Worksop.

“It’s quite nice. I especially like the pedestrianised area. I expected to come this way from Doncaster, and I was surprised to find this great piece of history. I’m moving on to Mansfield next as I make my way to the coast before I head to France.”

He added: “I hope to complete my journey back in Harrogate in seven years.”

Mihai has set himself a target of raising an impressive £100,000 for his three chosen charities.

“I want a British, International and Romanian charity, so I have chosen The British Heart Foundation, Water Aid and the Princess Margaret of Romania Trust,” he said. “I hope that people will show their support.”

To sponsor Mihai and follow his progress, photo-diary and latest news, you can visit www.theworldphototour.com

The people here are lovely and have given me plenty of help and advice, I come twice a week and also to Rug Rats.”

Kayleigh’s sister Zoe, 21, of Park Street, said she was helped when she became homeless.

“They put me in touch with Framework which has a hostel with 12 bedsits and I’m happy there. I come here three times a week for support and to look for jobs.”

Centreplace also hosts WOW - Worksop Outs Wednesdays - a midweek club for gay and bi-sexual people. It attracts people from places further afield like Sheffield, Rotherham and Mansfield.

Gemma Webster, 23, of Clinton Street, said she first started visiting Centreplace after attending WOW meetings.

“They helped me quite a lot with some stuff and to get myself back on track. I was at North Notts College studying music but had to drop out because I was travelling from Sheffield on the train and it got too expensive.”

“I help out here with the activities and run the tuck shop and they are helping me to get back into work.”

Danielle Jackson, 16, of Keswick Road, left Valley Academy last year and is now studying public services at North Notts College.

“I really like it here and it’s become a big part of my life,” she said.

For more information call 479191, go to www.centreplace.org.uk or look up the Facebook page.

TURBINES towering over the picturesque village of Corringham are not a sight many people can imagine.

But it could become reality if plans go ahead for 17 wind powered turbines, as proposed by green energy company SSE Renewables.

This image, produced by campaign group No To Local Wind Farms, shows the scale of the turbines which could be built on land at Browns Holt between Corringham and Yawthorpe, near Gainsborough.

Standing 126m high, they would be the tallest structures in Lincolnshire, towering above Lincoln Cathedral (83m) and even Big Ben clock tower (96m).

“It’s difficult to imagine how these giant turbines would look from surrounding villages, so we have created these digital representations,” said group chairman Peter Baldwin.

“We want people to see how these structures would dominate the local villages and countryside.”

SSE held a series of public consultation events at Corringham Village Hall last summer. But a planning application is not expected until late summer, pending results of environmental studies.

“We are preparing to put our objections forward,” said Mr Baldwin, 66, who lives in nearby Willoughton with his wife Kay, 65.

Browns Holt is just one local site with wind farm potential. RWE Npower Renewables held consultations last month on proposals for ten turbines just north of Hemswell Cliff. And a further 12 are proposed near Huckerby.

“There could be a total of 39 if they are all granted, and maybe more in the pipeline,” said Mr Baldwin.

If built, the wind farms could be seen from as far away as Lincoln, Worksop, Rotherham, Hull and Grimsby.

But when the time comes to object, the No To Local Wind Farms action group will focus on the local impact.

“There are seven grade one listed churches, several protected wildlife species and sites of historical and archaeological importance in the area,” said Mr Baldwin.

“We have West Lindsey’s only 5* bed and breakfast nearby, horse training schools, dog boarding kennels, airfields and flying schools, which would all suffer with turbines on their doorstep.”

Air and road safety are also a worry.

He said: “Tornados and fighter training planes regularly use the area to practice. Will they be able to continue with 126m turbines in the way?”

“The A631 is already deemed a dangerous ‘red road’. These massive things could easily distract drivers.”

A typical turbine produces enough electricity each year to supply of 1,000 homes.

But when the wind is low, turbines produce less electricity. And during high winds they must be switched off.

SSE Renewables says electricity generated from the Browns Holt wind farm would feed straight into the National Grid.

But Mr Barlow is sceptical about the benefits for local people.

“These turbines have the capacity to produce 2MW per year - a total of 34MW for the Browns Holt site,” he said.

“This is just a drop in the ocean. At peak times the National Grid supplies around 600,000MW of electricity.”

“If turbines could replace the need for a power station like West Burton, and we could close that power station, then I would think twice.”

The Government wants make energy more sustainable by increasing renewable energy sources and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

A spokesman for SSE Renewables said: “These photomontages do not give any indication of exact scale, height and width of blades, and as such it is impossible to discuss their accuracy.”

He added that the company would soon be producing its own images representing the Browns Holt turbines.

West Lindsey District Council were not available to comment before we went to press.

To find out more about the campaign group go to www.notowindfarm.co.uk

And to see SSE’s Browns Holt plans visit www.sse.com/brownsholt
